Andrew Beaizley was born in the Midlands in 1946 and was educated at Birkenhead School, receiving organ lessons from Timothy Lawford. At the Royal Manchester College of Music studied with Ronald Frost between 1964 and 1967, gaining Graduateship of the Royal Schools of Music and Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists. His first organ post, at the age of 16, was at St James, Birkenhead, followed by St John’s, Knotty Ash. In 1967 Andrew was appointed Lecturer in Music at the Royal National College for the Blind, Shrewsbury, leaving in 1970 to spend two years in Australia as Organist and Music Teacher at Christchurch Grammar School, Perth. During this time he was also a Lay Clerk and acting Assistant Organist at St. George's Cathedral, where he studied organ with the Revd Michael Wentzell. Leaving Australia in 1972, he returned to the Royal National College for the Blind, and was appointed Organist of St Mary’s, Shrewsbury. Moving with the College to Hereford in 1978, he became an assistant Lay Clerk at Hereford Cathedral, followed by a period as Organist at St Paul’s, Hereford, and was appointed Director of Music at the College in 1989 until taking early retirement in 1993. He has given many recitals, at venues including St John’s Basilica, Saarbrucken, Hereford Cathedral and at the Hereford Three Choirs’ Festival. In the 1970s and 80s he served as Chairman of the Music Sub-Committee of the Royal National Institute of the Blind, and was a founder-member/Chairman of the Music Teachers’ Support Group (a national organisation for teachers of visually-impaired students). Early retirement offered the opportunity to pursue further activities, in particular work with the Churches’ Fellowship for Psychical and Spiritual Studies, of which he is a Vice-Chairman, together with a growing involvement with the Liverpool Organists’ Association, of which he has twice been President and is currently Newsletter Editor. Apart from music, Andrew’s many other interests include cooking, reading, counselling, travelling and desk- top publishing. Andrew was appointed Assistant Director of Music at St Saviour’s in 2001, and very much enjoys helping to maintain and develop the excellent musical tradition. |
