The O Antiphons are special acclamations used at Evensong on the last seven days of Advent.
They are called the “O Antiphons” because the title of each one begins with the vocative particle “O”. Each antiphon acclaims Jesus Christ, using a title given to him in the Bible.
The O Antiphons form the basis for the beautiful Advent hymn, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.
This year we are thinking together about five of these titles of Jesus. As we consider these titles, they will help us to welcome Christ into our lives anew.
Advent 1 (Sunday 2 Dec): O Root of Jesse
Advent 2 (Sunday 9 Dec): O Dayspring
Advent 3 (Sunday 16 Dec): O Key of David
Advent 4 (Sunday 23 Dec): O Adonai
Christmas Day (Tuesday 25 December): O Emmanuel
