St Saviour’s Branch Centenary Year 2010

Looking through the old registers of services we found out that the first recorded mention of Mothers’ Union at St Saviours was in February 1910, when the First Corporate Communion Service was held. It is recorded that there were 28 communicants and the collection amounted to £1 3s 5d. The first Enrolling Member was Mrs Sayer, wife of Canon Sayer who was Vicar of Oxton from 1907 to 1938. Canon Sayer had a Special Chalice, which came from France. When Mrs Sayer died, he had her engagement ring set in the stem. This Chalice was presented to St Saviours Mothers’ Union on Canon Sayer’s death. Members (including the late Louie Dunn) travelled up to the Lake District to receive the Chalice from Canon Sayer’s daughter. It is still used on special occasions and will be used at our Centenary Service.

There have been 16 Enrolling Members (now called Branch Leaders) during the 100 years of our existence. In 1955 Grace Rockley, wife of the incumbent, presented the branch with a blue table cloth, embroidered with the MU logo. This cloth is still in use every month on our speaker’s table.

In 1976 Mothers’ Union celebrated the Centenary of it’s founding by Mary Sumner. Our Branch Leader at the time was Joyce Mullett who was involved with Overseas work. She arranged for a group of our Young Wives and Mothers’ Union members to go to London and take part as name bearers in a procession of Overseas Members at a meeting at Central Hall, Westminster. Several are still members of our branch today. Thank you to Sally Spencer for keeping copies of old Oxton Outlooks with this information in.

Who do you recognise?

In our branch at St Saviours, besides having meetings twice a month, members quietly get on with supporting the aims. We help the Wirral Womens Refuge by passing on good bedding and clothes. Some members knit tiny clothes and blankets for the neonatal unit at Arrowe Park Hospital, others help make coffee and toast for St Saviours Toddlers each week, others are baptism visitors. Many of our members collect money in their Overseas box each week and last year over £400 was collected in this way to help support our Overseas workers. Our major fund-raiser each year is our Coffee Morning. All the money raised at this goes to one of the Mothers’ Union Central Funds. Please book Wednesday 28th April to come to our next coffee morning at 10.30am.

As this is our centenary year, we have a ‘Book of Memories,’ which is being passed to every member. Please fill it in with some memory of a Mothers’ Union Event that has been special for you. It might be a Service, an Outing, a Meeting, The Wave of Prayer or.....

It will be something for us to treasure for our future.

The next ‘BIG’ event is our Centenary Eucharist
