Music at St Saviour's
Acting Director of Music Glyn Môn Hughes went to Birkenhead School and began studying organ under Timothy Lawford. He read music at the University of Wales under William Mathias, undertaking postgraduate work at the universities of Cambridge and Leicester. He joined the staff of the BBC in London in 1978 and worked as a sub-editor on Radio Times. In the early 1980s, he was seconded to BBC Wales in Cardiff to work as a radio music producer but the smell of printer’s ink lured him back to London where he continued working for the BBC but also freelanced for newspapers such as the Sunday Times and Daily Telegraph. He returned to Cardiff in 1984 to work on the Western Mail, then moving to Birmingham to work on the Daily News, Europe’s first daily free newspaper. He returned north in 1988, rejoining the staff of the BBC in Manchester and working on publicity for the BBC Philharmonic, becoming completely freelance a couple of years later. In 1998, he took on the role of music critic on the Liverpool Daily Post, a role he still carries out. He also writes extensively for a range of other magazines and newspapers, including Classical Music, Music Teacher, Choir and Organ, The Guardian and The Independent. He has contributed to the output of Classic FM and BBC Radios 3 and 4. He is also an accompanist playing regularly at venues around the region and has been organist at a number of churches in both the London area and Wirral. Since 2001, Glyn has been Senior Lecturer in Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University. In this role, he not only teaches the journalists of the future but is also involved in research activities and is presently looking into Welsh language journalism and is working towards a PhD in this area. The Choir The Church Choir sings at services on Sunday at 9.30am and 6.30pm, major festivals such as Christmas and Easter, and occasionally at other events. Rehearsals take place on a Thursday evening at 6.30pm. We’re always keen to welcome new members to keep the choral tradition alive at St Saviour’s. If anyone is interested, please contact Glyn Môn Hughes on 0151-608 3361 or 07979 815419 or see him (or a member of the choir) at one of the services on a Sunday. Occasional Choir Members of the Occasional Choir supplement the Church Choir for major festivals and other events (provided they attend at least two rehearsals prior to the particular event). The may be called upon to sing at other services from time to time at, for instance, the monthly Parade service on the first Sunday morning of the month. For further details - and to volunteer! – please see Glyn, give him a call on 608 3361 or 07979 815419 or email glynmonhughes@ntlworld.com This Months Music List
