In the Parish cycle of prayer we pray for those living in: Yewdale Park, Allonby Close, Anthorne Close COLLECTS Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. God of time and eternity, whose Son reigns as servant, not master; we give you thanks and praise that you have blessed this Nation, the Realms and Territories with Elizabeth our beloved and glorious Queen. In this year of Jubilee, grant her your gifts of love and joy and peace as she continues in faithful obedience to you, her Lord and God and in devoted service to her lands and peoples, and those of the Commonwealth, now and all the days of her life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Monday of this week (6th February) is the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Accession to the Throne. We mark this occasion today with the second Collect given above. In addition, the National Anthem will be sung at our 10.00am service, and we shall open Evensong with the hymn which was sung at the Queen’s Coronation Service, ‘All People That On Earth Do Dwell’. Our Jubilee Celebration takes place in June.
THE NEW TESTAMENT READING
A Reading from The First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 9 verses 16-23 (page 931) If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe betide me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I might by any means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. The Gospel Reading is: Mark Chapter 1, verses 29 - 39 (page 813) Lent Ecumenical House Groups for 2012 – Handing on the Torch: a York Course. Christianity is the largest movement our world has ever seen. It continues to grow at an immense pace – especially in Asia (including China), Africa and Latin America. At the same time, Christianity in the West struggles to grow and – perhaps – even to survive. In this course we consider some of the reasons for this and what it might mean for individual Christians, for churches and for Western culture, in a world where alternative beliefs are increasingly on offer. We have a variety of venues and leaders from different churches to help us. Please sign up on one of the sheets at the back of church if you wish to attend. |
